5 Water Safety Tips for Your Lazy Day Float Experience

Rafting

When you need a day to just unwind and let go, a lazy day on the river is one of the best ways to relax in nature. Sure, you can chill on the riverbank, but why just watch the water go by when you can join in on the fun? With Lazy Day Raft Rentals, you can enjoy being on the water while still having a relaxing day.

To ensure that you have a fully “lazy” experience, it’s important to plan ahead a little where safety is concerned, so that you can enjoy your day to the fullest and not have to worry about any emergencies. With that in mind, we’ve put together a few tips to make your time on the water as safe and worry-free as possible.

Sun Protection

Calgary is a sunny city, and while that sun makes for some great weather to enjoy the outdoors in, it also means you need to keep it in mind when you’re going to be out on the water all day. While the sun on its own can be brutal, add in the additional light reflecting off the water and you’ve got a recipe for a sunburned disaster.

Thankfully, that fate is easy to avoid with some sunscreen. Remember to look for a higher SPF, water resistant, and bring it with you so you can reapply every couple of hours. A hat and sunglasses can also make dealing with the sun a lot more comfortable.

Life Jackets & Safety Kits

Since you’re going to be on the water, a life jacket is a no-brainer — which is why we provide it for you! Life jackets and safety kits (including a safety whistle, rope, and a bailing bucket) are all included with your rental. Your job is just to keep track of the safety kit so that it is easy to access if you need it, and to wear the life jacket at all times — both for your safety and because it’s the law.

Cell Phone

A way to communicate with the outside world is one of the most important safety tools there is, but that means you also have to think about keeping your phone safe — after all, cell phones and water are often a dangerous combination, and a phone on the fritz isn’t going to do you any good if you need to call for help. With that in mind, we recommend keeping your phone in a waterproof case or a dry bag, which can be purchased at the launch site if you don’t have one ahead of time.

Another thing to keep in mind is your phone’s battery life. If your battery tends to die quickly or if you plan to take a lot of photos or videos on your phone, it may be wise to also bring a backup battery charger for your phone.

Attire

Making sure you’re wearing the right thing can help ensure your safety when you’re out on the water. Of course, you want to be comfortable, and we are very on board with that! As long as you’ve got the sunscreen covered, shorts, tank tops, and bathing suits are all great. The one thing to keep in mind for safety’s sake is your footwear. While flip-flops are comfortable and may seem like the obvious choice around the water, we actually suggest something sturdier like water shoes or sneakers due to the rocky shores you’ll encounter.

Be Aware

The number one water safety rule to keep in mind Lazy Day Rafts is to try to be aware of your surroundings as much as possible while you’re on the water. While we encourage lazy days, you definitely want to pull over onto a safe bank before you take a nap. We also try to monitor the weather, but if you notice an unexpected storm rolling in, it might be wise to get off the water until it passes.

At Lazy Day Raft Rentals, we’re here to ensure your lazy day in Calgary, Alberta goes as smoothly as possible, so we are dedicated to your safety as you float along the river. Before each rental we’ll have a safety session with you to go over the basics, which along with these tips can help you have the relaxing day on the water you deserve.
