Precautions that You Should Take for River Rafting in NW Calgary

White Water Rafting

River rafting is gaining popularity as a relaxing past-time for nature-lovers and city dwellers alike. With any activity, especially something on the water, there is a certain level of preparation and safety measures to consider, so we’ve compiled a list of considerations for any rafter to make before your next float to ensure maximum fun and minimum mishaps.

Safety for Your Rafting

Get the right fittings

You must select the appropriate equipment for your river rafting trip. Inquire with the outfitters about the proper fit and what type of safety equipment is suggested for your purposes. Ask how long they’ve been in business and also whether the equipment is covered by a warranty.

Wear a well-fitting life jacket or other personal flotation device (PFD) correctly

Wearing proper flotation devices is required when on the water. Check that your life jacket is snugly fitting around your body. Make sure that your life jacket cannot be easily pulled up over your head, as it must stay on your body to keep you floating if you are tossed into the water and are not able to surface on your own. If safety isn’t a concern, bear in mind it’s also a mandatory court appearance and up to a $500 fine to be without one!

Keep the paddle in your hand properly

It is critical for you to always properly handle your paddle. One hand should be at the paddle’s base, and the other should be holding the end of the shaft over the “T” grip. This will help to properly handle the paddle and prevent you from accidentally hitting your mouth, teeth, or eye with the grip.

Wear clothes that are suitable for your excursion

To have a good time rafting, make sure you wear comfortable clothing that fits your needs. It is recommended to layer your clothing so that you can remove or add specific pieces as needed while rafting. Depending on the time of year, you may want a semi-dry suit to keep the majority of water away from your body.

Prioritize what you bring with you

The majority of tour operators have the policy of “carry your valuables at your own risk.” This makes it abundantly clear that you should, as much as possible, avoid bringing valuable items along with you. Your car keys, wallet, and cell phone can become irreparably damaged during a river float.

However, some items are necessary. Don’t forget to pack the necessary pills or medications that you may need on the journey before embarking on your raft experience. You can pack a dry portable bag that contains medication, bee sting kits, inhalers, band aids, or other items that you may require while adventuring. It’s also a good idea to stay hydrated and protected, so pack your water, sunscreen, and sunglasses!
